I do not remember what moved me to start making donations to the Sacramento Food Bank in the early 1990’s. It may have been a card mailed to my house, or something I might have seen on the news.
The Food Bank was being run by Father Dan Madigan, an Irish priest who would ride a mule up to outdoor masses at his rural parish of St. Joseph’s in Clarksburg.
I started sending them small amounts, $100 or $200 or so, whenever I could. These were the early days of my business, and we struggled to pay our bills on time and collect the money we were owed. I soon discovered that when I sent the Food Bank money, I would get a release from the stresses I was feeling. And it always seemed that when I did send them some money, I would soon get a check in the mail, just in time to make the payroll or pay a bill that was about to become overdue.
Over time, I made donations to the Food Bank a regular thing, and the giving made me more relaxed about money and although my business still had its struggles, I believe the giving to the Food Bank helped my business, rather than it being a cost.

The Capital Cup adapts the historic Ryder Cup format—steeped in tradition—to promote community pride, healthy competition, and raise money for the Sacramento region’s most deserving charities. Each year, leaders from the Sacramento region are divided into two teams for an exciting 3-day golf competition. Donors have the opportunity to support their favorite player (or their favorite charity), as each player is competing to benefit his or her favorite charitable organization. The winning team's designated charities share a prize fund of $100,000! The tournament started with the ambitious goal of raising $250,000 in its first year. When it well surpassed that goal, the tournament committee raised the bar, and has continued to do so every year since—and every year, the participating golfers exceed expectations. The Capital Cup has raised more than $15 million over its history.
